Today’s mixed chick of distinction is Zoe Saldana. Zoe was born and raised in Passaic, New Jersey. Her mother is Puerto Rican and her late father was Dominican which makes her 100% Latina and proud! She has risen through the ranks to become one of the most sought after actresses in Hollywood. From her first role as a ballerina in Center Stage to her international breakout role as Neytiri in Avatar, Saldana is breaking down the barriers for women of all ethnicities. Today’s mixed chick of distinction is Nicole Scherzinger. Born in Honolulu, Hawaii and raised in Louisville, Kentucky, Nicole was born to perform. Her mother is half-Hawaiian and half-Russian while her father was of Filipino descent. She made her splash on the music scene after winning a spot in the reality show Popstars which spawned the pop group Eden’s Crush in 2001. A few years later, the band broke up and that’s when she got the opportunity to audition for a new up and coming group called the Pussycat Dolls. International fame followed as Nicole and the Pussycat Dolls put out hit after hit. Throughout her time as the lead singer of the Pussycat Dolls, Nicole continued to focus on her solo career launching several solo projects over the span of a few years. In 2010, the Pussycat Dolls called it quits which gave Nicole more time to focus on her solo career. Over the past few years, she has added a few cool highlights to her resume including being a judge on The X-Factor and competing on Dancing With The Stars. The sky is the limit for Nicole and we are proud to call her our Mixed Chick of the Day!

Today’s mixed man of distinction is Ludwig Van Beethoven. Many people are not aware that the famous composer and one of classical music’s greatest pianist was biracial. Born and raised in Bonn, Germany, Beethoven’s father was a German musician and his mother descended from the Spanish Moors who are of African descent. Beethoven moved to Vienna when he was 22 and began studying music under the direction of Joseph Haydn a noted composer and musician. As Beethoven’s talent and skills grew, he began to compose some of the most beautiful classical music ever recorded. In his later years, his hearing began to fade and eventually he was deaf. He died in 1827 leaving a legacy of glorious music that still resonates to this day. We celebrate Beethoven as our Mixed Man of the Day!!!!

Today’s mixed chick of distinction is Kelis. Born and raised in Harlem in New York City, Kelis is a musical powerhouse and a style icon. Her father is well-known African-American jazz musician Kenneth Rogers. Along with a career in music, he was also a Pentecostal pastor and a professor at Wesleyan University. Her mother is an Afro-Puerto Rican and Chinese fashion designer and the catalyst for Kelis’ obsession with style, fashion and design. Kelis landed a record deal in the late 90′s when she linked up with the super producing duo the Neptunes – Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo. In 1998 she released her first Album Kaleidoscope. Her first single “Caught Out There” was a big hit and soon Kelis was a rising star on the R&B and Hip Hop landscape. While her career was continuing to climb, she met famous rapper and MC Nas. The two were married in 2005 and had a son in 2009. Unfortunately, the marriage didn’t last and they were separated and divorced in 2010. Kelis is currently working on her seventh studio album. She is an edgy mixed chick with tons of style and we love her!

Have you recently undergone the Big Chop? Are you in the middle of growing out your hair after years of relaxers and thermal procedures? Have you already gone natural but you want to increase the length of your curls? If any of these apply to you, this is the post you have been looking for. Growing out your curls is one of the most popular issues and concerns for most curly girls. Fortunately, there are tried and true ways to grow out your curls in a healthy way giving you the results you’ve only dreamed about. Check out these simple tips and get ready to show off your gorgeous spirals, ringlets, waves and curls.

1. Invest in Quality Products

Great hair cannot happen when you’re using alcohol-laden hair care products. Curly hair needs tons of moisture which means you will want to use shampoos, conditioners, styling products and treatments infused with hydrating ingredients. Sulfate-free shampoos and moisturizing shampoos are a must-have as they cleanses hair without stripping its natural oils. Stay away from shampoo/conditioner hybrids as these products tend to be very drying and their formulas are primarily shampoo based with very little conditioning agents leaving hair stiff, brittle and damaged. When searching for good conditioners opt for products with natural ingredients such as; olive oil, mango oil, shea butter, keratin proteins and vitamins A,C and E. Styling aids are another area where curly girls need to invest in quality products. Stick to lightweight gels, pomades and creams that infuse hair with moisture while adding shine and definition.

2. Limit Your Trims to Once or Twice a Year

The age old myth of trimming your hair every six weeks is just that, a myth. In reality, routine trims like the ones spouted by countless stylists and hair experts is for those with damaged hair from such processes as relaxers, perms, coloring and thermal procedures. If you have natural, unprocessed curls, your hair will not need to be trimmed every six weeks. Matter of fact, you can get away with once or twice a year trims depending on the health, condition and desired length you seek. Trimming your healthy hair every six weeks will certainly limit your growth as you are constantly trimming away the length leaving you in a never-ending cycle. For those of you in the process of growing out your curls after transitioning from relaxed hair to curly hair, you may find that frequent trimmings in the beginning of your journey are needed to remove the damaged ends that are currently growing out. Just remember that once you have finished growing out the last of the relaxed hair. your need for routine trims will diminish.

3. Purchase Hair Supplements

No matter how you slice it, we often do not get enough nutrients and vitamins from the food that we eat on a daily basis which means our bodies are oftentimes deficient in several vitamins, amino acids and other nutritional necessities needed to grow strong healthy hair. In order to offset this situation, it is highly recommended that you take hair supplements on a daily basis to help fuel your hair growth in a natural and healthy way. A few of the best hair supplements on the market are:

• Biotin – This water soluble supplement is water soluble and is a B-Vitamin which can be found in foods such as; nuts, carrots, eggs, fish, poultry and mushrooms. This hair-strengthening and lengthening supplement creates strong, healthy hair after a month and is known to greatly enhance your natural hair growth cycle.  4. Heat-Free Hair 

Even though you may love seeing your curls blown out straight and smoothed down with a flat iron, you will want to limit the amount of heat you apply to your hair as frequent heat can weaken and damage the hair causing it to break off. Many times, we are using too much heat at temperatures that are literally frying and cooking our delicate strands. If you want to change up your look, there are several heat-free methods as well as lower heat options including roller sets and air-drying that will give you the straightened tresses you desire without all of the heat damage. Another reason to limit the heat is the damage that is done to your scalp. Many times the flat iron or blow-dryer comes in contact with our delicate scalps leaving welts, burns and scabs which are major components to losing one’s hair as well as extreme breakage.

Known for her stunning beauty and her amazing skills handling a surfboard, the California born and Hawaii bred surfer/model is an inspiration to female athletes around the world. Malia’s heritage includes Hawaiian, Spanish-Filipino, German and English. She made her debut on the world surf stage at the tender age of 15 when she won the U.S. Amateur Surfing Competition. Soon after she won, she was approached by Surfing Magazine to model for their swimsuit issue which was the beginning of her successful modeling career. Over the years, Malia has posed for countless magazines and even has the honor of being voted as one of People Magazine’s 50 Most Beautiful People. Because of her surfing experience, she was tapped as a consultant for Disney’s Lilo & Stitch – an animated film set in Hawaii about the surf culture.
