Today’s Mixed Chicks History Month person of distinction is Gugu Mbatha-Raw, the star of the critically acclaimed new historical drama “Belle” that opened nationwide in select theaters on May 2nd.Mbatha Raw is a well-known British actress who has been seen on a few television shows both in the U.S. and across the pond. You may recognize her from the short-lived J.J. Abrams produced show “Undercovers” which she co-starred with Boris Kodjoe.

Mbatha-Raw is biracial – her mother is English and her father is from the Republic of South Africa. She was born to play Dido Elizabeth Belle, the biracial daughter of a Royal Navy Officer who is brought to England by her father and left in the care of his uncle, Lord Mansfield the Lord Chief Justice.

Mbatha-Raw will surely gain lots of media attention for this role and will hopefully continue to get amazing roles that showcase her range as an actress and her ability to play all types of women – regardless of her race and ethnic makeup.
